5 star review on RHYTHM UK!

This month we received our first 5 star review on the prestigious UK's Rhythm magazine.
The great thing about it is that it was our Maestral model, that has just had its patent extended into an application for international validity.
2011 finishes with another great new: we finally secured a distribution deal in the USA with a company named Big Bang distribution, and we will be at 2012 NAMM fair in Los Angeles.
Thanks everybody for their support, happy new year!

A few months ago Paquito González called me and told  that he'd just seen a dismountable cajón at Tam Tam shop in Seville, and "...it doesn't sound bad".
Knowing his moderation of judgement, it was clear to me that they did it.
What I had tried to figure out many times, a cajón that could reduce, was now alive and kicking.
Just when we finished releasing our new patent, here it comes a more spectacular invention, "stealing the show", so I got on the internet and there it was.
If I was already quite sure of the outcome, now it was crystal clear: logical, simple, built with common hardware, the way I like it.

I already knew the brand, J. Leiva Percussion, having seen other instruments of his in various music shops, and I already noticed his original and inventive mechanisms.
I decided to call him up to congratulate him, and also to find out if there was a chance of using his mechanism on a license basis, but as soon as he picked up the phone it was like meeting again a long lost friend, and before we knew it, we were discussing the possibility to do something more, a real collaboration, joining the dismountable cajón "Omeya" with the removable front "Maestral".

Paolo, Pepe, Carmen, Aurora, Francesca, Nina.

The good vibe we hit since our first conversation put us in an unexpected situation, wanting to know each other and work together.
So it turns out that we have the same age, and so do our daughters, and yes, our patents too...
A couple of weeks later Pepe drove some 800 km and brought his wife Aurora and Carmen to Igualada, where my wife Francesca and Nina awaited their arrival.
We had a ball, and decided to go ahead with the project.
Now, at last, the Siroco cajón is a reality, the first three units have left for Los Angeles, Paris and Frankfurt, to our distributors.
There is one unit left, that we are waiting to deliver to one of our endorsers, for the "christening" on stage.
I'll keep you posted...

Dame Evelyn Glennie plays DG

Another super endorser joins our family, Dame Evelyn Glennie, from Scotland.
She was the first classical percussionist in the world in achieving a soloist career, and a very successful one, as it goes.
I had the chance to see her in concert in Rome, and it was a great experience: she moves effortlessly from marimba, to snare drum and even clay pots, performing original scores that in most cases were composed especially for her.
I recommend thoroughly a great documentary about her that was released not long ago: Touch the Sound.
It is a great way to know her work, and her personal experience dealing with a very peculiar challenge for a musician: since the age of 12 she has in fact lost up to 80% of her hearing faculties!
That didn't discourage her at all, if anything, it proved to be an extra motivation in achieving her goals.
This excepcional career was recognized even by the Queen of England, who appointed her with the official title of Dame.
What a great example of talent and determination!
We made a special cajon for her, with a Tartan pattern that she has designed: Rhythm of Evelyn Glennie.

Sheila has also recently performed together with Prince at a TV show and some concerts in Los Angeles.
It is always an event to see her playing, she is awesome, and for us at DG it's been a privilege to count with her support and encouragement.
Being a true personification of the art of drumming in the American society imagery, like Buddy Rich, Tito Puente or Ringo Starr, she is also involved with charity projects for young people, thus becoming a positive model on a large scale.
Here is a touching interview, which gives an insight of her current commitments:

So congratulations, and a huge thanks from myself and the people at DG.
Viva Sheila E!

DG at Frankfurt Musik Messe 2011

We finally took part to a major music fair, since the company was founded, back in 2003: it was the world famous Musik Messe in Frankfurt, and we entered through the big door, thanks to our German distributor, Box Of Trix.
They set up a wall of cajones, and several good looking
banners in their impressive stand, there also was a screen playing the new Maestral promo constantly, so our presence was perfectly highlighted.

Visiting the dozens of stands that were there, I had the feeling that the cajon is carving itself an increasing space within the music world, yet the big companies don't seem to have understood yet how it is supposed to sound.
The great majority of cajons that I saw, I would estimate a 90%, were quite poor in quality.
This is good for us, because it makes us stand out, but on the other hand, I feel that such a low average quality is slowing down the spreading of the cajon in places like the US, where it is still perceived as a somehow curious and exotic thing but is still not taken very seriously...
with our friend Tommy Omori
And the trouble is that in this kind of events, if you don't have a super trained ear, it is very difficult to get the differences between a good and a bad one, due to the massive background noise caused by thousands of people playing drums and cymbals at once.
Actually I think that an Aspirin stand would be very popular too!
DG + Billy Cobham

Marco Fadda came with me to the show, and we had the chance to meet old and new friends: Billy Cobham, Horacio Hernandez, Pete Lockett, Selva Ganesh, Juan Bauste, Mark Collazo, Dave Kuchermann, Valter Kinbom, Christian Krebs, Ovidio Venturoso, plus our distributors in Japan, Akira Kikutani and Tommy Omori, Djalil Bendraoui from France, Dick Visser from Holland, Franco Scavino from Italy, Jes Sorensen from Denmark, Karoly Feher from Hungary, and also David, Darran, Ryan and Simeon from the UK.
Other new distributors showed great interest in our work, so hopefully we might get to new countries in the future.

Marco also performed a solo set on the main stage on Friday afternoon, here you may see an excerpt:

So, it was a very interesting experience, and I wish to thank Sibi Siebert, Stefan Thomas and all the Box of Trix staff for their friendly and professional attitude.
See you soon!

Ulysses Owens Jr visits DG Percussion

Last friday we had a special event at the factory: the great NY jazz drummer Ulysses Owens Jr came to Igualada and recorded an exciting improvisation on the cajon with his magic wire brushes.
It all came together at the last minute; I knew that Ulysses was coming to play near us at the Jazz Festival in Terrassa, but it wasn't until the day before that it ocurred me the possibility to record him as a realistic one.

There are so many factors when organizing this things, and didn't count on the possibility of doing it, because Ulysses was going to be in Spain for just a day, and it looked impossible to cram in a recording during the afternoon.
However, Ulysses was really keen on visiting the factory, and since his plane was landing before noon, the chance took shape.

Next, I called my friend Kiko Caballero, who was the recording engineer for the recording of Paquito Gonzalez dvd, and is currently working for Chano Dominguez, and asked him if he was available to come and help with his professional experience, and he said yes.

That was it, we had everything ready with a few phone calls and e-mails.
I picked up Ulysses at the airport and drove back, got there, ate a sandwich and after a visit of the factory, started recording, which was amazing.
Being a top jazz drummer, Ulysses masters brush playing, and although I have seen the cajon played with this mean by many percussionists from various parts of th world, I never saw the real art of brushes applied, the school that comes from the jazz tradition, and from masters such as Philly Joe Jones, to make an example.

Fortunately there is a video of that so I won't have to try and describe it!
He couldn't resist the temptation to play the wall of cajon that made the background and also played a little bit of drums for us, on the kit that I keep next to the office, so we had a private concert!
After that I drove him back to Terrassa, and I realized how patient and committed he had been: having played almost every night in a different country for the two previous weeks, what he really needed was to relax and sleep, yet he didn't spare himself for this occasion.

The Kurt Elling gig was very good too, a big success, and he actually played the cajon a couple of numbers, as you may see on this picture.
Thank you so much Ulysses, we were all impressed with your great talent and gentle ways!

Tom Chapman: cajón in the UK

I am happy to introduce the new website of Tom Chapman, an excellent musician and dear friend.
Tom helped with a musical contribution on the documentary "Los Caminos del Cajón", and we have kept a close cooperation ever since.
His main projects are very good folk music acts, appearing at international events.
The Old Dance School
Urban Folk Quartet
In a similar way to what Flamenco musicians did, he is putting the cajón as the rhythmic foundation for a traditional musical setting, in this case British Folk.
Once again, the cajón blends perfectly with the other acoustic instruments, and while keeping the essential vibe of that musical language, it adds something which feels natural, and compatible.
Tom has a great sound on the instrument, and takes the role of the cajonero with musicality, without overplaying, but also taking his spaces when is needed.
I really recommend that you check him out!

Maestral!

Last december, I patented a new model of cajón; I had been studying for quite a long time the possibility to make an instrument that allowed the playing board to be removed and replaced, just like it can be done with drum heads.

As a drummer, if you wear out a head, you don't throw away the drum, you just put a new head on, also, you may need a certain thickness of surface to get a specific sound, or even write out the name of your band on the bass drum; so why couldn't we apply the same concepts to the cajón?

There are some cajones that feature the front plate completely screwed onto the body of the instrument, but those are wood screws, not meant to be placed and removed for many times.
It had to be a system involving metallic threads, and a reliable tension mechanism which wouldn't be affected by the intense amount of vibrations that the cajón receives from the player.

After various attempts, I got on the right track, and did a few  prototypes which seemed to deliver a good sound.
So I proceeded with the patent requirements.
This took a considerable time and effort: all the drawings and descriptions were the applications of one fundamental concept which involved metallic threads and springs, yet the possible implementations were two: a difficult, elaborate version, and a simple one.

The simpler version, existed inside my head, and in my drawings, but I didn't seem to be able to bring it to life, unless I gave up on certain maintenance requirements that were very important to me.
I wanted to make an instrument that could be dismounted and kept in perfect functionality by anyone, with basic tools and little effort, but the simple version didn't allow it yet.

The employees at the factory were quite interested and puzzled about this new instrument: they would pass by my working space and throw an eye, or ask a question, but judging by their skeptical and amused expressions, the ideal solution didn't seem achieved yet.
Then one day it all clicked; one of the employees, suggested that I used one of the pieces of the mechanism in a way that had not ocurred to me yet, as a result, I was able to eliminate  a lot of components that complicated the manufacturing process quite a lot.
The half smiles turned into pats on the shoulders, as the guys were finally convinced, and not so worried about having to produce a cajón that involved lots of  different bits and pieces.

I had various names in mind for this instrument, but what made me decide was that on the day of the "light bulb", an incredibly strong wind from north west swept the region of Catalonia, where we are based, and by coincidence, the name that I liked the most was Maestral.
Since I love sailing and windsurfing, and the Maestral in the mediterranean usually shows up as a friendly breeze, this name brought a lot of fond memories.
This time it came like a storm,  so I took it as a strong sign.

Within two days I had the final version, "the number 0", in my hands, and I realized that it would have been great if I could have it tested by a top player in a good setting.
All of a sudden I remembered that Paquito was coming near Barcelona to play with Vicente Amigo, one of the greatest Flamenco guitarists in activity.
To make this coincidence even stronger, this concert was part of a festival named "De Cajón!" (an expression that in Spanish means "of course").

We varnished the cajon on saturday at noon, and by 5 pm I was on my way to the theatre Sagarra in Santa Coloma de Gramenet; I called Paquito and asked him if he was willing to try it out, and even play it at the show.
"I'll give it a try, but I must warn you that I am currently very happy with the last Yaqui that you gave me, so it better be damn good to convince me to swap them over!".

Well, it was  pretty good in the end, because it passed the sound check test and made it to the gig, so Paquito was the godfather of the new Maestral, and its first gig was Vicente Amigo.
Not bad for the first day out of the factory!
These are a few pictures of the day, with Gabriele and José,  DG employees, Paquito, and members of the Vicente Amigo group, bass player Antonio Ramos "Maca", dancer Dani Navarro, and the Man himself.
Next stop for the Maestral will be at Frankfurt Musik Messe, one of the largest music fairs, if this was the christening, then that will be the debutant ball.
Woooooosshhh!

Wooooooosshhhh!
