Paquito y el Drum Fest

Paquito Gonzalez  at Seville's  Drum Fest - november the 7th 2010

This event takes place in Seville every year, and is the most important drum related show in Spain.

Organized by a drum shop called Tam Tam Percusion, it hosts performances of world famous drum kit players, from rock, metal, latin and jazz genres, this year it was the first time that they decided to put a flamenco cajón player on the bill.

José Manzano, the owner of the shop, called me and said: "I know that Paquito is your endorser, and that you had this dvd production going on, so I decided to put this thing in your hands".

Paquito was thrilled by that, but also a bit worried about the outcome; after all, there were going to be some of the hottest drummers on stage, with mega kits and dozens of cymbals, what would be the reaction of the audience in front of an apparently minimal instrument?

Well, first of all Paquito is not a mere cajon payer: as a matter of fact he has developed (especially with his band UHF http://ultrahighflamenco.com/ ) an interesting percussion set, which includes cymbals, flat toms and a snare drum, therefore he is able to intrigue a drum audience with a sound palette which is familiar to their ears, but he can go back to  just the cajon, and keep them nailed to their chairs, thanks to his way of playing with lots of different shades, strokes and dynamics, multiplying the cajon sounds by ten times.

Also, I feel that beyond the instruments issue, there is something  which makes a Flamenco percussionist interesting for a specialized drum and percussion audience: there is a new breed of cajon players in Spain who developed a very advanced language over the last 30 years, and they  master it just like Americans do with Jazz idiom, or Cubans do with their own musical heritage.

So I was convinced that not only the show would go down well with the audience, but that even the other performers would love it.

Paquito  was announced as first on the bill , and decided to divide his show in two parts: he would play a cajòn solo to start with, and then he would sit behind his special kit to play with his long term mate José Quevedo "Bolita", a wizard of the Flamenco guitar, from Jerez de la Frontera.

The show went down like a storm: with 400 people filling the auditorium (and another 100 were left outside), the reaction was overwhelming.

The star of the event, American drummer Dave Weckl, especially turned up for his set, even though he was due to play more than 6 hours later, and  enthusiastically complimented  Paquito  after his performance.

So the bet was won, a cajon player can take part to a drum show and  turn the crowd on. 

Mind you, if that cajon player happens to be Paquito, González then the result is guaranteed.

Este evento se hace en Sevilla cada año, y es el espectaculo sobre la batería mas importante que hay en España.

Organizado por la tienda Tam Tam Percusión, presenta actuaciones de bateristas de fama mundial, de estilos rock, metal y jazz, pero este año fue el primero en que decidieron poner a un cajonero flamenco en el cartel.

José Manzano, el  dueño de la tienda, me llamó, y dijo: " Sé que Paquito está  esponsorizado por tu marca, y que hicisteis un dvd  didáctico juntos, asi que he decidido poner esto en vuestras manos".

Paquito se sintió honrado por la invitacion, pero al mismo tiempo, algo dudoso; al fin y al cabo, allí se verían algunos de los bateristas más en boga en el escenario, con sus mega baterías y docenas de platillos, cual iba a ser la reacción por parte del público frente a un instrumento aparentemente tan minimál?

Bueno, en primer lugar Paquito no es un simple cajonero: de hecho ha desarollado (sobretodo con su banda UHF http://ultrahighflamenco.com/) un set de percusiones muy interesante, que incluye platos, tambores llanos y caja, por esto es capaz de atraer a una audiencia de bateristas con un abanico de sonidos familiares para sus oidos, pero al mismo tiempo de volver al cajón solamente y clavarlos en sus asientos, por su manera de tocar, llena de matices y dinàmicas,  que multiplican los sonidos del cajón por diez veces.

También creo que mas allá del tema de los instrumentos, hay algo que hace un percusionista Flamenco interesante para un público especializado en lo rítmico: hay una  generación de cajoneros en España que ha desarollado un lenguaje muy avanzado a lo largo de los ultimos 30 años, y lo dominan asi como los Americanos lo hacen con el Jazz, o los Cubanos con su propio patrimonio musical.

Por esto estaba convencido de que no solamente la actuación tendría exito con los participantes, sino que también los otros artistas invitados disfrutarían de ella.

Paquito estaba anunciado por primero en el cartél, y decidió dividir su actuacion en dos partes: tocaria un solo de cajón para empezar, y luego se sentarìa detrás de su set especial, para tocar junto a su compañero de muchas aventuras, José Quevedo "Bolita", un mago de la guitarra flamenca, de Jeréz de la Frontera.

La actuación fue un exitazo: con 400 personas en el teatro y otras cien que no pudieron entrar, la reacción fue de entusiasmo total.

La estrella del evento, el baterista americano Dave Weckl, vino expresamente para verle, aunque su turno para tocar fuera 6 horas después, y le complimentó mucho.
Se ganó la apuesta, un cajonero participó al Drum Fest, y el público se encendió.

Claro está,  si  el cajonero se llama Paquito González, el resultado es garantizado.
